Living more sustainably

No buying clothes for a year

Do you remember that last year I said I wasn't going to buy any clothes for a year? I succeeded... well, almost... because in all honesty, I couldn't control myself in the month of December. That had to do with (here come the excuses) my vacation and the holidays. My glass is half full, so I think I did pretty well... 11 out of 12 months without buying clothes. It was tough at times, especially at the start of summer. That is, after all, a period when you want to buy new clothes, in my case because I no longer fit into all my current summer clothes (long live the corona kilos!).

Good intentions failed

Now you might wonder, why did you give in during the last month of the year? Let me start by saying that the final stretch is always the hardest. During my vacation, I saw all those fun brands and clothes that aren't so easily available in the Netherlands. So I let go... and quite a bit at that. To draw a comparison, you don't eat candy for a very long time, then decide to have one piece anyway, and subsequently eat the whole bag. Only to feel really bad afterwards! Only that bad feeling didn't come to me. Once home, I wanted to wear something nice for the holidays, so hop, there I went again. I did only buy sustainable items, though. I actually already did that before my New Year's resolution.

Buying second-hand clothes

Eleven out of twelve months, not a bad result, right? Now that it is January, I also don't feel the need to suddenly start shopping for clothes. In that regard, it has given me peace of mind; no more searching for hours for that one item or habitually putting something in a shopping basket again. I hear from many people around me that they want to focus more on sustainable clothing or also want to try not to shop for at least half a year. A friend of mine mainly shops for vintage clothing and she comes back with the most beautiful designer outfits. That isn't in my system yet, but that might just be the most sustainable way to expand your wardrobe. Of course, there are all sorts of ways to do that nowadays, and that might just be the next step: breathing new life into clothes!
